Yay or Nay: Home Hair Dye

Hair_dye With the release of Boots at home straighten kit, I thought it was a good time to assess your opinion on at home hair dying (or perming or straightening for that matter). The hairdressers is (nearly) always a better bet, but when I’m faced with a choice between a £4.99 home kit and an £80 hairdressers bill, I have been known to go with the former. Last week you almost unanimously voted nay for wild brows (with the exception of Linda who wears hers brushed up with pride), but what about a bit of hair DIY -  Yay or Nay and why?

Yay or Nay: Home Hair Dye - Comments

Now I'm a brunette it's a Yay. I used to pay £150 every 6 weeks (obviously it was instead of eating) to get strategic highlights put in, and there's no way I'd try that at home. But now I'm brunette, I can do it for a fiver. And no one knows (or if they do, they're too polite to say anything). Just make sure you don't scrimp on the haircut.

  • Yay - I have very happy memories of blue hair dye (though that's another story), and my mom saves loads of money now she does her own.

Nay for me, but then i have very curly hair which starts snapping at the very idea of anything more aggressive than a spot of henna...

YAY for darker colours (which I dye my naturally blond hair black)

NAY for lighter colours (I have fried hair thanks to a blond moment I was having that could have been prevented had someone come to the store with me)

  • Nay for at-home colour, but only because I've had a fair few nightmares with it. I've seen plenty of great dark colours done at home but as a blonde I have to go to the pros! Herbal Essences in dark blonde did rescue me from tiger stripe hell once or twice, though.
