Reading Beauty: Top 5 Beauty Books

Bobbi_brown_4 If Kiss and Makeup isn't enough beauty reading for you, get studious with our picks of beauty reading matter.

5. Bobbi Brown Beauty

This book is quite old now, but the principles of applying makeup are timeless. I particularly recommend Bobbi's technique for applying concealer. I was amazed at how different my makeup looked just from following her principles.

4. Cosmetics Unmasked: Your Family Guide to Safe Cosmetics and Toiletries

This book debunks ingredient lists and helps you to decipher exactly what you are rubbing into your skin. There's a list of over 2000 of the most common cosmetic and toiletry ingredients and impartial information to help you decide just what is safe and what might be causing allergies or irritation. A must for any beauty geek.

3. Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor

I haven't read this book yet, but the amount of products beauty editors have to try just for their jobs, as well as constant contact with the best makeup artists, means their knowledge is unparalleled. There's several similar books, but this one has the most positive reviews. Covering every area of beauty, this will teach you tricks of the trade and help you look your best.

2. Recipes for Natural Beauty: Neals Yard Remedies

Perfect if you want to know exactly what you are using on your skin and hair - make it yourself. Some of the recipes in this book require specialist ingredients, but many are simple and you can create a cosmetic concoction from your kitchen cupboard. Try a washing ball instead of a cleanser, mix crumbled bread, ground almonds and chopped raisins into a ball, and use in place of soap. This book also contains a handy glossary of common cosmetic ingredients.

Beauty_bible 1. 21st Century Beauty Bible by Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley

This really is a beauty bible. Whenever I want something new and am flummoxed by the selection on offer, this is where I turn. Every product featured in the book is tested by a team of real people, and only high-rated products make it into the book. So far, they've been spot on. They championed Liz Earle's Hot Cloth Cleanse and Polish and countless other products that I first discovered in the book. They also offer a very useful 10% discount at HQhair through their website. Remember who sent you there and come back and see us every once in a while though!

Reading Beauty: Top 5 Beauty Books - Comments

  • I've got Paula Begoun's "Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". It is very through, but it weights ton. So her title of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" is not really a possibility.

    Good Book..wish it had pictures.

  • The Cosmetic Cop's (aka Paula Begoun) books get my vote. In depth reviews of pretty much every cosmetic on the market and really good info about must have products and ingredients to avoid.

  • Mel

Not long time ago I came across an article about the beauty bible. I was a bit sceptical first, as it sounded too good to be true lol. But then decided to astill order it and have not regretted it since. It's simply great!

  • Great post Charlotte, that Allure one sounds fab, I used to read that mag a lot... and I bet your number 1 pick would teach me a LOT! As would number 5... Thanks for the linkage, too! :)
