The new nail trend: Bright outfit-matching half moon french manicures by Dior

Half_moon_french_manicures_at_dior

The new Dior ads (on the left) feature this striking new nail trend - brightly coloured nails, topped off with a white French manicure tip and a white half moon. Granted, it's the sort of thing that could go horribly wrong if you don't have a steady hand, but if you got it right in an outfit-matching shade, it could look downright fabulous! The colour matching was also evident in the autumn/winter catwalk show, where models bore shades beautifully matched to their outfits (right). Would you consider trying this yourself, or is it just too much hassle?

OMG, hassle! Besides, how tacky is being all "matchy-poo"? Next we'll be putting matching ribbons in our hair, carrying pompoms and cheerleading!

That's the way nail polish was worn in the 1920s and 1930s. The half-moon and the nail tips were either painted white, or left entirely unpainted (i.e. with colour only applied to the pink bit of the nail). Later in the 1930s the trend was for a white half-moon and colour on the rest of the nail, including the tip.

It was called the "moon manicure".

It's hard to do, but it can look very good if done well. Too much hassle for me, in general.

Wow GJ Hallam you're a wealth of information! I'll have to look the originals up.

I agree with you and Keely that it's a lot of hassle though, although I think matching is ok with the white tips and half moons - makes it less matchy-matchy somehow. Any other time though, god no!
