Beauty insiders #2: Makeup artist Rhona Cullinan

Leopard_print_eyesIrish make up artist Rhona Cullinan sure has been busy of late, in addition to creating a DVD and writing a book, she also recreated that leopard print eye shadow (originally seen on Beyonce) for a shoot...

First things first, how difficult was it to recreate those leopard print eyes?

When I originally planned the shoot for this look I thought it was going to be very difficult to recreate but in fact it was quite easy. I used a base colour all over the lids. Then using gel liner I drew the shapes in adding in a red pigment inside of it. It was time consuming making sure it was all blended perfectly and the eyeliner was perfect and I do recommend practising this look a few times first before doing it for real...

What's the most common make up mistake you see?

Probably the most common mistake I see is girls mismatching their foundation. They either use a foundation too dark or the wrong tone for their skin. One of the main reasons for this is that when they go to a store to buy foundation they are testing the colour under false lighting. You need to test a sample on your jawline and go out to natural light and see does the colour perfectly blend with your skin ie. if you cant see the foundation it's a good colour for you!

Number one make up tip?

Blend, Blend, Blend! Whether it's the eyeshadow, foundation or blusher make sure to blend it completely so it's not obvious and looks flawless.

What beauty product wouldn't you be without?

My No 1 beauty product would probably have to be my primer – I use MAC Prep & Prime – it creates a great base for makeup and evens out the skin so even if your not wearing makeup it gives your skin a great glow

Tell us a bit about your dvd and your book?

As the Head Makeup Artist for The Academy of Beauty where I teach the ITEC Makeup Course we spent a lot of time planning the course. Derek, The Principle of the Academy came up with the idea of making Ireland's first Makeup DVD to show people step by step how to recreate 3 different makeup looks – day, evening and smokey eyes. Its demand in the market led us to distribute the DVD through branches of JAPAN Clothes shops around Dublin and it's also available to buy online at www.academy.ie.

From there, myself and Derek decided we would like to do something for charity, as we have both been involved in charitable causes before. So we decided to write a make-up book and donate the proceeds to The Marie Keating Foundation, a charity that provides free information for breast cancer patients. The book (title yet to be decided) will be designed in an easy to understand format with step by step instructions, enabling the user to achieve a variety of looks. All “models” used in the book will be real people who want to enhance their looks or use corrective make up techniques. Some of the features in the book include home made face masks, and recreating eyebrows and eyelashes after Cancer. We are hoping to launch the book early next year but you can keep up to date with news on my website www.professionalmakeup.ie. I'm very excited about it! Thanks Rhona!
