Diary of a nail biter, day one

nailbiter.jpgI wish I could tell you that the disgusting bitten nails in this photo belong to some random guinea pig we've unwittingly roped in to helping us out. Sadly, they don't. They actually belong to me, and I'm very ashamed to be putting them on display to you all like this. I've bitten my nails on and off for as long as I can remember, and it's a habit I'm determined to kick this year. Thing is, I have the willpower of Amy Winehouse, so the only way I can even attempt to make changes is by embarrassing myself into stopping. Cue lots of photos of my ugly, dry, bloody cuticles and crappy nails, displayed to the world. Aren't you excited?

I'll be trying as many products as it takes to get my nails, cuticles and hands into some semblance of attractiveness. It's a tough job, but I have a desk full of products that promise to solve all the problems I face, from the biting itself to the subsequent soft, flaky nails. I'll be recording it all in this diary so you can follow my success (or lack thereof).

Starting off, I'm going old school with Boots Expert Nail Biting Solution, a bitter liquid so strong it only needs to be applied every other day. I've used products like this before to some success, but the usual problem is that they make everything you pick up taste crap too. This isn't too bad for me (it's more of an incentive to work on that willpower) but it may cause some problems when I'm feeding my pet hamster.

I'm just about to apply it, so stay tuned tomorrow to see how it goes. If anyone has any tips on how to stop biting my nails, do let me know. I'm willing to try almost anything!

  • I have to say, I am a nail and cuticle biter myself. I tried gel nails 3 times (love the glamour of it and thought it would help with biting). It helped with the biting, but when the nails came off all 3 times, my nails were thin and ruined. They are almost regular again. The last part has grown almost to the top. I don't know how to stop biting. I make my own cuticle butter, but I don't sell it yet. Keep us informed. -A fellow biter....

I have gel overlays, they let your nails breathe underneath and promote them to grow. You can get them in french, clear or a colour and they are just a gel painted over your nails that gets set under uv lamp. They last about 3-4 weeks before infills. You will have too tough to bite nails and when you finally want to remove the gels and go au natural, you'll have lovely long nails that you can paint and you won't want to wreck.

Are you testing OPI nail envy, QVC has an amazing value TSV today that is worth £72 and being sold for £26!!

I find keeping them painted helps because it's even more embarrassing to have chipped nails. For myself, at least.

Other than that, keeping your hands busy is probably the best idea. Sit on them, even. It's how I stopped.
