Diary of a nail biter, day two

kiehlshand.jpg24 hours into my attempt to stop biting my nails, and we may have already encountered a problem. The nail biting solution is working a bit too well. Now everything I've touched - even, I'm guessing, the hamster food - tastes disgusting. On the upside, I definitely haven't bitten my nails.

I'd forgotten, from the old days of my mother pinning me down and painting my stumps with Stop 'n' Grow (which is currently winging it's way to me, by the way) that these anti-bite liquids are so strong they rub off on everything. Food, utensils, pets, wine glasses...

To credit Boots, their Expert Nail Biting Solution is definitely 'resistant to hand washing', as it says on the package. I washed my hands three times with washing-up liquid, once with soap and once with Cif, and my dinner still ended up having a faint bitter aftertaste. I made the mistake of following the directions and applying the product to the skin around my nails as well as the nails themselves (I have just as much of a tendency to nibble the skin as I do the nails - don't judge me, you know you do it too). Next time I'll only be touching up the nails.

Meanwhile, today's product of choice is to get my hands and cuticles looking as nice as my nails with - hopefully - eventually be. I'm taking a softly, softly approach because most greasy, intensive hand creams render me unable to type for at least fifteen minutes, so I went for Kiehl's Coriander hand and body lotion, which smells faintly of its namesake without reminding me too much of my parents house on curry night, and soaks into the hands in seconds. So far so good, I'll let you know how it goes!

I recommend you always ALWAYS carry a manicure set - not only a nail file but a pair of micro nail scissors. You need to trim off the annoying hanging bit of cuticle and file down the rough nail edge, intead of letting it irritate you so much that you end up nibbling at it, which will be the top of the slippery slope!

And then also put in there a mini hand cream (I use L'Occitane, which is rich and feels a bit borderline greasy, but does absorb eventually and stays on as a protective layer) so that whenever you feel the slightest rough bit on one of your fingers you can slather it on thickly and prevent yourself chewing. It's also a way of giving your hands some positive attention.

Carry it EVERYWHERE because you'll need it the day you leave it out of your bag.

And wear gloves. As much as possible.
