The Great Lipstick Trial: Jelly Pong Pong 'Trifle' spongy lipstick

Well, we've done it. We've tried close to 100 lipsticks to bring you the best (and possibly the worst) in the business. This review marks the beginning of the Great Kiss and Makeup Lipstick Trial, and I'll be bringing you the results over the coming weeks. With a bit of help from our friends, the Kiss and Makeup team have tried everything from indulgent £20 buys to bargain £2 lippies, in colours ranging from soft nude to scarlet, in order to help you find your perfect lipstick. We'll begin with something a bit special, for those of you fed up of cakey, thick textures and drying formulas...

When we asked you what you'd like to find in a lipstick, a lot of you said you'd love something that was somewhere between a gloss and a lipstick; soft, squidgy and shiny, but with more staying power than your average gloss. We may well have found it in Jelly Pong Pong's creative new lippy, the 'Trifle'.

A really gorgeous consistency is the main reason this lippy scored highly. If you're not a fan of cakey, old-fashion formulas then the shiny, spongy feel of this modern alternative might be just what you're looking for. It feels very light on the lips, and the colours are stronger than you expect. In terms of lasting power, my application lasted well through a lunchtime snack but didn't fare so well through a bottle of diet coke. Obviously with a shiny, soft finish it's not going to be up there with an 8-hour, budge proof option, but it does well enough.

The packaging is young and girlie, which may put off the more chic among us, and the lippy itself is in a clear tube, which runs the risk of looking a bit cheap. That said, the ribbon wrapped box it comes in is hard to resist, and the product has a yummy sweet scent that's a nice change from the soapy scent you often find in lipsticks.

Jelly Pong Pong is a notoriously young and quirky brand, but they definitely deliver on their promises instead of just creating products that look nice but act mediocre. All in all, I was really impressed with the texture, colour and lasting power of this product, and would definitely recommend it to young, funky girls looking for a viable alternative to gloss.
