Salon Review: Jamie Stevens at Errol Douglas

It's always a treat to sit beneath the scissors of master stylist, and Jamie Stevens is certainly that. Not only is he Art Director at the prestigious Errol Douglas salon, he's also the Creative Ambassador for GHD's (you can swoon now girls) as well as being a celebrity stylist, and it was his scissors I was perched under.

I entered the airy bright salon, tucked just off the main road in South Ken, and was offered a drink by the friendly receptionist. The magazines were all up to date, and Errol himself was wandering through the salon.

Jamie is the Art Director, so I knew he'd have good advice regarding my hair, but I was also shy of going too short. I know layers look great on me, but the maintenance and styling is generally to stressful.

'I always work with the client', said Jamie, 'I want to give them a haircut they can maintain at home'.

To start off we discussed the kind of cut suitable for my face shape. I was almost swayed by a long soft fringe, but we opted to just shape up the front ends instead to create a gentle look. I was advised to think about changing my parting regularly, as this would give me a multitude of looks.

He realized I was nervous about losing length and promised he'd be kind, reassuring me that his half an inch was a reality not a stereotypical hairdressers inch (we've all been there).

He razor cut the ends to give it a nice blunt look and zig zagged the scissors around to give it a textured finish- one that would grow out nicely as well.

I was slightly embarrassed that I'd arrived with quite bad roots (hey, I'm a busy girl), but he gave me helpful tips on hiding them. I learnt that if you create a slightly off centre parting, and don't make it straight they'll look more disguised as the messy parting gives the illusion there's less of them.

I was impressed with Jamie's demeanour and the way he really listened to my requirements, as well as how he didn't flinch at storing heated straighteners in his back pocket! 'It does hurt', he confided, 'but you get used to it'.

Prices start from £110 for a cut and blowdry with Jamie, and differ depending on which stylist you opt for. I left with bouncing shiny locks that flattered my face, and I had a smile that lasted for two days!
