A week of bright eyes: Day 1 (teal and turquoise)

First things first. I know in the poll you guys voted that the next challenge faced by the team should be a week of no makeup. but I'm leaving that one to Zara. My skin is a real mess at the moment, and I need my mineral foundation!

So it was up to me to try out one of the other top voted choices, and I opted for bright eyes, because I've been lazy about eye makeup for ages now, and it was a good excuse for me to try some new things. With no further ado, I bring you day one of bright eyes, and my attempt at something in teal and turquoise...

Firstly, this challenge is not about me going out of the house looking like a drag queen, so I'll be trying to use colour in interesting ways to create looks that actually can be worn by 'normal' people. Of course I might go a bit crazy on Friday night, but other than that it's about using bold colour sparingly to create interesting looks.

For day one, I built up the colour starting with lime green on the inner eye and turquoise on the outer edges, using a Too Faced shadow duo and a big fat brush. I then built up the colour towards the lash line with Barry M's amazing dazzle dusts (78 is amazing for this) and some matte teal from Sleek's 'Chaos' palette. Bourjois' super-fine powder shadow added a bit of colour to the lower lash line, and I topped it all with dramatic black mascara - bright eyes call for big lashes!

Though it wasn't particularly good with my green eyes, the colour worked well with my outfit and my hair. I added a bit of lippy to begin with (Origins flower fusions in Orchid) but the general consensus was this was too much and a nude / clear gloss would have been better. It's important to make up the rest of the face when you're doing dramatic eyes (I had on mineral foundation, concealer and Nars blusher in Orgasm) but don't take it too far. Remember the 'one focal point only' rule with this look, or you'll end up looking like you're in a Christina Aguilera video.

This is probably one of the most wearable looks I'll try this week because it's concentrated on the lids and the colour is fairly universally flattering, so if you're new to colour, I'd recommend trying something simple like this. It also lasted the 15 minute walk home in the rain, a minor miracle!

Products used: Too Faced eyeshadow duo in 'Fantasy Island', Bourjois pastel lumiere in 'Bleu Iridescent', Barry M dazzle dusts 78 and 68, two turquoise shades from the Sleek 'chaos' eyeshadow palette and collection 2000 Magi-length mascara.

Tomorrow - I combine pink and green for a more tricky look...
