The New You Bootcamp: Arrival Day

Hi ladies, you may have noticed me missing from the site in the last week, and that's because I've been off in the wilds of Devon on a challenge to lose weight, tone up and generally focus on my health and well being. This isn't a camp for wusses, as it involves 5.30 am wake up calls, a kit list which includes 25 pairs of socks, and 22 tops! I'm quite nervous as I step off the train, as I'm not quite sure what to expect. Thankfully everyone is in the same boat, and we share horror stories of chip filled diets and sneaky choc stories. We all seem to have similar goals, as we all really want to make a difference to our lifestyle, but is this easier said than done?

I arrive at a gorgeous venue, the Kingsland estate, and am greeted by three military men, rough tough soldiers in combat trousers and tight white T Shirts. There's no time to relax and unpack as we're told to meet back at the lodge in 15 minutes sharp. Hurry to get change into sports gear and look around apprehensively.

First off, we all queue up to get weighed and measured, and it looks like people are regretting their sneaky lard-filled lunches as the scales are unforgiving. I get measured and apparently have 32% body fat- oh god! No time to dwell on this horrific revelation though as we have to plan our contract- what we require from the staff, and what they want from us.

'Energy', 'enthusiasm' and 'motivation' are bandied around, but we all know it's really down to us as individuals- as we're the ones who really care about results. We're not allowed to know the names of the Staff, they're known simply as Staff Reitze, Staff Udall and Staff Nesbitt. Keep wanting to salute as they make us line up outside, and assign us a number. I'm Number 8, and this is how I'll be known for my stay.

Next up is the fitness test, a gruelling task that involves minutes of non stop sit-ups, press-ups and running. I haven't done a press up like ever, so I'm allowed to partake in 'box' press ups. the girly kind. Manage to push out 50 and am happy till it's revealed most people managed about 120. Oh well.

I nip back to the room quickly to change for dinner and discover my belongings have been sifted through- no, not a nosy cleaner, the staff searching for illicit contraband of the chocolate variety. Ah. Thankfully I'm clean.

Dinner is a medley of tofu (ew) and vegetables. It's great to see how they've catered for everybody, as though the food portions are small they've been cooked by a chef- not just a cook. They've catered for the five vegetarians (of which I'm one) a lone vegan and the rest of the meat eaters (they got fish). No caffeine or fizz to go with the meal, just copious amounts of water and fruit teas. Drank two of them, and still don't like the taste, but I've been assured I'll learn to love it. Hmm.

Dinner is followed by a gruelling hike up the hill, flashlights needed to see where we're treading. It's hard, and I'm told they're going easy on us as it's the first time.

After this, the male staff leave us with strict instructions that we have a 5.30 am wake up call for training on the hill, and the girls gather in a LED circle on the lawn. The lovely Kirsty and Sunny (camp trainers) give us a little pep talk and we all share a little info about ourselves, as to our reasons for coming. It's quite emotional, as everyone has different stories, and there's one common theme- neglect.Whether it's a partner leaving, demanding children, or even a hectic job we're all guilty of not giving our bodies enough 'me time', and hopefully this week will change that.

After a nice chat which helps us bond as a group we head to bed, aware of our early start. I'm still not sure what to make of this all, but can't help feeling like it's going to be a week I'll never forget.
