I've told you guys before about the Verlocke Zip & Go hair extensions, but I was so intrigued and impressed by this new type of extension that I had to give it a go. I'd had my last extension taken out two weeks ago (enough time to let the hair rest) and was missing having long bouncing locks. I wanted new hair with minimum fuss, and seeing as the Verlocke Zip & Go extensions don't need hot tools, I was able to have them put in over a lunchhour in the office.

To refresh your memory I'll explain how Zip & Go differ from everyday extensions. Normal hair extensions come with the glue/bond already attached. Depending where you go the bonds differ from keratin to protein, but essentially it's glue on the end of the extensions. This gets heated with a styling wand and then stuck into the hair. The Zip & Go contains no glue at all, rather each hair strand contains a loop on the end. This is then threaded through the hair and then tightened till the loop falls away, similar to threading a needle. The ring on the end of the hair is then tightened with pliers to hold it on the hair.

By not using heat you're being kinder on the hair and they're also a lot easier to remove as you simply unclamp the bond in the other direction and slip it out. I had my hair done by Greig Hodnett who runs Grow Hairstyling who was extremely gentle. He was so excited about the Zip & Go system that I was really encouraged, and he told me that I could re-use the hair as well, as around 80% of it could be reused. It was suggested that I take out the hair every 3 months to a give my hair some rest and then reattach and it seemed so easy to apply that I felt confident I could do some at home.

Greig expertly sectioned my hair applying layers of extensions at least an inch away from the hairline so I could tie my hair back in a ponytail. He stated at the back working his way to the crown adding layers and strands of different colours for a natural look. I'd opted for straight blond hair as opposed to wavy which would give me length and add volume. Greig told me some women have this just for volume which I could imagine. He did use a glue though, which I was surprised by, but he applied this onto the hair just before he clamped the ring bond down- this was t help it stick he explained. He did say it could be easily brushed out though, which I was happy with.

I was impressed by how natural the extensions looked when in, and that they really looked natural. As my colleague said, 'Zara's back to Barbie again!

It took around two hours to apply two and a half packets and then Greig Hodnett trimmed the hair into shape so it blended with my own hair. It felt amazing, and seemed really low maintenance. I was told to shampoo it carefully and only brush it with a wide tooth comb, but I was so thrilled with my lovely locks I didn't mind, Two days on and I'm still over the moon, and can't believe how easy and simple the procedure was- and how great my hair looks!.
