Summer Beauty: Makeup for a beach holiday

TS0605BobbiBrownBrick.jpg

With Ibiza season in full swing and the get-away months creeping up on us it's time to sort out our holiday makeup bags. There's some fabulous makeup this season, designer and budget, so we have put together a selection of the hottest beach-beauty-booty. Whether it's a hot bright gloss, a multi-functioning space saviour or a practical sweat-banisher all these gorgeous products deserve a coveted space in your makeup bag this Summer.

Read on for our round-up of this season's essential beach makeup!

Eyes

Eye makeup in the heat, in particular creamy eyeshadows and liquid eyeliners, is partial to smudging, creasing and downright shameless melting off your face. Makeup doesn't bode well with sunny climes so to ensure it doesn't slip or slide invest in Too Faced's Shadow Insurance, £11 a silicone based primer that 'locks in' colour and acts as a barrier between the oils from your skin and eyeshadow or eyeliner.

There are some fabulous eyeshadow palettes out this season which is great when you're trying to be minimal with your makeup bag content! We especially love Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Sorching Sun, £23 which creates a beautiful 'drenched in gold' effect and looks amazing on a tan. Ideal for a glamourous Glamazon look. But if you fancy a splash of shimmering colour then Estée Lauder's Bronze Goddess Eyeshadow Palette, £25.45 has a wearable selection of velvety smooth, neutral and bright eyeshades with no horrible 'fillers'.

If you want to save your cash for those expensive Euros then purse-friendly Wet 'n' Wild have a lovely new I Sparkle compact, £4.49 with a Clinique-esque flower design of gorgeous iridescent eyeshadows in complimenting dark and light shades. It comes in four colour combinations but we love the pink palette which has a delicate mix of pearly pink/oyster and golden hues.

We also like Urban Decay's Get Baked Palette, £15 which has an impressive selection of stunning bronze, gold and turquoise shadows, a mini bronze eyeliner and a vial of primer potion. For all out colour then Barry M's Dazzle Dusts, £3.99 have some vibrant new additions in the form of Parrot Green and Teal.

Eyeliners and mascara need to be completely waterproof to avoid the obvious 'panda eyes' dilemma. We love bargain e-tailers e.l.f's waterproof eyeliner pen, it glides on and not only comes in black but really gorgeous plum and midnight blue shades too. Avon's Arabian Glow Clearly Shadowed Eye Pencil in Plush Purple & Vivacious Turquoise, £5 are also a great way of wearing colour if eyeshadows aren't really your thing. Rimmel's Sexy Curves Waterproof Mascara, £7.82 is the best waterproof mascara we've tried, it still has the same bumpy wand for curvy lashes but it is K&M tried and tested pool-proof. Another water-worthy mascara is Urban Decay's Big Fatty Waterproof Mascara, £13 which just makes us smile with its trademark psychedelic packaging.

Lips

Nothing screams Summer than a bright lipgloss! We are loving this season's hot brights and for a space-saving solution The Body Shop's Hot Brights Lip & Cheeks, £9.50 does what it says on the tin - it provides hot bright colour on cheeks and lips. You can build up the colour for a real intense look for glam nights or apply lightly for sheer colour - perfect for a low-key beach look. We are also loving Paul & Joe's Lip Gloss with a Spiral of Gold in 003, £14 for a look-at-me bubblegum pout and H&M's Tropical Fruits Lipgloss in Tropical Peach, £2.99 is an on-trend coral gloss with glitter flecks that lightly sparkle in the sun.

YSL Tresor D'Afrique Lip Palette, £37 has five pearlized lip colours that are long-wearing, (ideal if you don't plan to lug your makeup to the beach!) and look beautiful on any complexion but for a cheaper alternative Pop's Mini Ribbon Gloss in Poppy Red, £5 is a tiny tin with three juicy wet-look glosses in punchy summer shades.

As well as slapping on the suncream it's important to protect your lips too. There are some great lipglosses with added SPF such as Hawaiian Tropic's Sunkissed Lips Island Berry SPF25, £6.99 and Collection 2000's Love Your Lips Gloss which is so smooth and stick-free, like us, you'll be amazed it's only £2.91!! and if you can't bare to give up your lippy on your hols then Barbara Daly Lipstick, £5.06 is a creamy lipcolour that has real staying power and a (hard to find) SPF15.

Cheeks

Every Summer the beauty brands go all out to create some down right gorgeous products and this year they truly have excelled themselves with some beautiful bronzers! They have most likely been influenced by the bronzed looks that were seen on the catwalks, notably Pucci's '70s inspired supertan look.

Rimmel are on a roll at the moment! Their 3 in 1 Shimmering Bronzer, £5.99 creates an amazing effect with its spectrum of shades that can be used separately to highlight and illuminate or blended together for all over shimmer. You can use it on eyes and décolleté too - this is one product that will not let you down on holiday, it is one of the best new bronzers out there. Plus you can alternate with the colours as your tan develops so you won't get that shameful tangoed look.

We also love Givenchy's Prismissime Mat & Glow in Sun Caramel, £30.82 and
Estée Lauder's Luminous Liquid Bronzer, £20 is literally like liquid gold! It's a bit fiddly to get the right amount on your face but a dab of it is enough to provide a sheer pearlised finish - you can mix this with your eyeshadow, foundation, and bronzer too for instant glow. For more colour and less sparkle then their matte bronzers are worth a look too as is Chanel's 4 Facettes Bronzing Powder, £39

If bronzers aren't your cup of cocktail (see what I did there..ha) then try adding a touch of citrus colour to sun-kissed skin with Clarins Sun Light Sun Shimmer Palette, £20 it blends together for a healthy peach shimmer. Or you can use the shades separately, lightly applying for a subtle veil of colour or layer on for an intense colour pop.

As for blushers it's best to stick to powder formats if you have oily skin as a creamy blush might enhance a shiny-face, and not in a good way. The Body Shop had some pretty pinks in their Spring collection Roseflower Collection which are now half price in the sale!! Mac's Mineralize Blush, £15 is a great holiday option as it's light and skin nourishing, important elements when sitting in the skin-drying sun all day. If you do prefer liquid blushers then kitsch brand The Balm's Stainiac Hint of Tint, £13 is a versatile stain for cheeks and lips that is small in size but big on colour.

Face

In hot weather it is so important to let skin breathe by going as fresh-faced as possible. This may be easily said than done, so if you can't bare to go foundation-free now is the time to really get into mineral makeup. It lets pores breathe, has skin-loving minerals and is super light so skin won't get congested in the heat. Collection 2000's Natural Matt + Minerals Foundation, £3.49 is a bargain buy but still provides a flawless coverage, as does Daniel Sandler's Super Mineral Makeup, £21

For a shine-free complexion Estée Lauder's Nutrtious Vita-Mineral Loose Powder SPF15 Makeup, £23.50 is moisturising and also provides vital sun protection. Benefit have outdone themselves again with their Hello Flawless, £24.50 a micro-fine powder that can be applied as a concealer or a face powder, ideal if you get any alcohol-sun-food provoked breakouts. To combat shine on hot days Paul & Joe's Limited Edition Blotting Paper, £10 will be an absolute godsend to instantly mattify the skin. The cute design will pretty up any makeupbag and if we were to take anything to the beach this would be it -it eradicates all shine so you're picture-perfect, even under the sweltering sun.

To hide all evidence of the night before you will need a heavy duty concealer like Benefit Erase Paste Concealer, £18.50 which not only covers up dark eyebags and imperfections but highlights skin too leaving skin luminous. A light-reflecting concealer will also cover up a multitude of sins when you're nursing a hangover the next day at the pool. As well as the usual suspects, Eyeko's Touch Up & Glow Highlighter, £5 and L'Oréal Paris Touche Magique Concealer, £6.84 will do just the job.

And the final product in your makeup bag? Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick for Body, £48.94 a simply divine shimmering powder that will make your skin twinkle!
