Ask the Expert: Haidresser Richard Ward tells you how to protect your hair for Winter

richard_ward_hair.jpgRichard Ward is something of an institution in thehairdressing world. He's the resident hair guru for GMTV, writes regular columns for the Sun,and regularly plays with the tresses of the rich and famous. We were lucky enough to grab some time with him for his advice on those winter hair problems.

Q Should you change your hairstyle during winter, and if so what do you recommend?

Lustrous locks need to follow a maintenance programme and home-care regime to keep them looking perfectly groomed and keep straggly ends at bay. Extensions with length only look great when it's moving and swingy - too straight and ends look frazzled and splintered. Ditch the styling irons and keep chunky by regular trimming to make hair look and feel full and bouncy.

Q. What effect does winter/changing temperature have on the hair?

In winter, we need to repair the damage and nurture the hair back into good condition. Hair is more likely to naturally shed in winter time (like animals losing their coats) as new hair is growing in its place, and many clients rejuvenate their hair by coming in for a good blunt, thickening cut after the ravages of the beach.

Q. What products would you suggest for managing frizz?

Frizzy hair is caused by moisture and humidity in the air drying out your hair. You must use frizz control products if you're prone to frizzy hair - my More Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner (£4.49 each) is ideal with a touch of Richard Ward Smooth & Define Serum for controlling the frizz. If your hair frizzes don't be tempted to dampen it down with water as this will just dry it out again, instead spritz with a leave in conditioner like Techni Art Fix Anti Frizz to put moisture back into the hair. Also, the better the blow dry, the less product you should need, so be sure to blow dry from wet (don't be tempted to towel dry first) and do it in sections with a bristle brush. The best test before moving on to the next section is to ensure each section is properly dry - if it is it will fall off the brush easily and feel cool.

Q. Should you change your hair colour in winter?

Going darker for winter is common - most women want to reflect the key fashion trends by opting for richer colours which are denser in tone. Darker hair reflects light better, so going for a deeper take on your current tone and a chunky cut to get rid of your aged summer beach hair will make hair feel healthier. Go for a clear colour gloss to add shine and lustre or a vegetable colour glaze.

cheryl_xfactor_hair.jpgQ. What celeb do you feel manages to do the winter transition well?

Definitely Cheryl Cole. Cheryl has grown out her fringe this winter and gone for a longer, layered look which has perfectly integrated the growing out front section into a soft, face-framing and ultra glamorous look. She's added some length to make this ultra feminine and stylish take on lustrous hair that is full of vitality.

Q. If you're older, would you do anything differently?

Colour is a great rescue remedy for thinning hair problems - it can bulk up finer, lifeless hair and the chemical process can contribute to drying out oily hair.

Shorter, textured cuts frame the face and soften and flatter. Styling should look natural, with volume and plenty of movement - so ditch the harsh looking shampoo and set styles of older generations.

Q. What trends do you predict for Winter 09?

Last year's crops have evolved - now they have their own identity as a look - grown-out, all over layers are worn long in the nape, tucked behind the ears, and slicked back. Versatility is key - style them up or dress them down for a different, chameleon-esque take. Ultra textured, the soft, flexible cut can be styled with boyish glamour, or worn curled, waved or sleek, taking it's inspiration from its 80's retro roots and feel. It's a multi-faceted cut; never boring and adaptable for day or evening. For a finishing touch of gloss sleek L'Oreal Professionnel Smooth Liss Control serum through hair.
