Industry Interview: Duffy, Clairol Creative Colour Director
When it's cold and gloomy outside many women reach for the hair dye as a way of lightening up their life and their hair. Be wary though, as what seems like a good idea when you're bored may be something you have to live with for quite some time. Duffy, Clairol Creative Colour Director guides us through the tricky world of hair colouring.
Q. What changes do you foresee in colour styling?
A. I would like to see more of an experimental change in colour styling. I think we have the technology now for people to experiment more at home with their colour, look at Clairol's demi and semi permanent colours. They're a great way of finding a new you without ruining the old you!
Q. What products would you suggest for managing colour damaged hair?
A. Colour damaged hair can be treated in several ways; firstly a visit to your local hairdresser is probably a good start; secondly I would use Clairol nice'n easy demi permanent colours as a way of enhancing the faded tones caused through colour damage and finally always use a good conditioner. Clairol ColourSeal Gloss is a great treatment that helps lock in colour and stops damaged hair from fading!
Q. What styling products can't you live without?
A. My must-have product for styling this season is a good conditioning mousse. It gives you the texture and body you need from hair without destroying or fading your colour.
Q Should you change your hairstyle/colour during spring, and if so what do you recommend?
A. As we all know by now blonde is going to be big for spring/ summer 2010, so if you have it enhance it! Be careful to stay within your tonal range; 2-3 shades lighter works really well. Remember if you're going on holiday to somewhere hot, your natural highlights are going to lift up so I'd suggest waiting until you're back before changing your colour! (PS - always remember to be kind to your hair in the sun, if you jump out the pool run some leave-in conditioner through your hair and allow it to bake in with the heat of the sun).
Q. What colours will be on trend this year?
A. Blondes are going to be big for S/S 2010, so think lighter tones. If you're blonde enhance it, if you're a darker tone try lifting a couple of shades lighter than your normal - it's all about a lighter feeling to your colour this Spring! (Clairol will keep any natural highlights in your hair and lift everything accordingly, so don't be afraid of losing that totally naturally sun kissed hair!).
Q. What celeb would you like to get hold of- who has the best and the worst style?
A. Marilyn Monroe would have been the ultimate for me, she sums up celebrity but in a really beautiful, natural way. Everything from her home hair colour to the accessories she wore, it was all so meticulously staged but effortlessly natural and beautiful! (She was also blonde...very s\s10).
I think a lot of the young "celebrities" make a lot of wrong decisions about their hair and style but we all did it, it's our own little way of discovering ourselves so I think we should encourage it. Clairol nice'n easy demi-permanent colours are a great way of experimenting without doing any permanent damage!
Q. What are your essential winter products?
A. Essential winter products for me are, a really good heat protection spray, due to excessive blow-drying and the central heating that dries our hair and skin out. Also, a really good treatment is a great way to spoil yourself and your hair. Pick one that will help lock in moisture, colour and intensity over these drab months!
Q. What trends do you predict for Spring 2010?
A. Effortless textures, and lived in hair, blondes will be big think Kate, Bardot, Marilyn.
