Schwarzkopf Professional Colour Ambassador Anita Cox-McMillan knows everything there is to know about hair colour and how to maintain it, and we managed to get some time with her to quiz her about how to look after our hair- and what trends to watch out for this summer.
Should you change your hairstyle/colour during summer, and if so what do you recommend?
Generally clients have a tendency to go lighter during the summer, so going for more sunkissed and richer golden colours. Style wise it's down to personal preference, some people like to go shorter allowing them to stay cooler whereas some people like to keep a little length as this gives them the option of tying it up when sat round the pool or stuck in the office.
What products would you suggest for managing colour damaged hair?
For colour damaged hair I'd suggest using Schwarzkopf Professional's BC Bonacure Repair Rescue range as they're specifically designed for damaged hair with 'Amino acid rebuild'. I'd also suggest using the Color Save Treatment which is a rich caring treat, alongside Colored Ends which is a leave in treatment to prevent colour treated hair from breaking, sealing tips and preventing split ends.
What changes do you foresee in colour styling?
Rich, golden, healthy colours
How do you treat a client who has thinning hair and wants it coloured?
Thinning hair, be it male or female, is something clients are very conscious about. Colouring is a great way to make hair appear fuller and healthier, some colours actually swell the hair giving this appearance but thinning hair can be more porous so avoid using anything too damaging like bleach.
What styling products can't you live without?
There are a few styling products I couldn't live without, hairspray is a definite must-have in terms of styling aids. Schwarzkopf Professional's OSiS Upload is a really light conditioning styling cream with a slight hold which is perfect for most hairtypes. Schwarzkopf's BC Moisture Kick Spray conditioner is great whether it's for detangling hair or adding essential moisture. It's a must-have for anybody. OSiS Magic Gloss is a really light anti frizz serum which gives instant shine and control with a light hold and the great thing about this serum is that its' easy to washout not like some serums. Finally Schwarzkopf's OSiS Dust It, a mattifying powder that adds texture and body - a great accessory if your hair is fine and limp.
What do you think about hair extensions - do you like them / hate them and do you have any favourite brands or application techniques?
Hair extensions are a great way to add fullness, thickness and length so they're ideal for big, sexy hair or updos. They are also a great accessory as they allow versatility and you can be as creative as you like aswell. In our salon we are using micro ring hair extensions which avoid using heat or glue so they're healthier for your hair.
What tips do you have for styling hair on the beach?
Styling your hair for the beach is all about preparation and protection, using products such as Schwarzkopf's BC Sun Protect Range. They are specifically designed for sun stressed hair, they all contain UV filters to protect as much as possible or use the BC Moisture Kick spray conditioner to help add essential moisture.
What colours will be on trend this year?
Platinum blondes, rich warm and golden honey tones as well as pastel tones.
