The lips are a focal point of the face so it's important you're happy with your pair. Lip plumping glosses can only do so much, and if you're looking for a fuller pour you might want to consider injectables. I'm quite happy with my bottom lip (natural) but felt my top lip looked small in comparison, so decided ti try the Juvederm Ultra Lip treatment to plump it up. I was quite nervous about this, so opted to visit the 'lipstick queen', Dr Rita Rakus.

Based in a lovely Kensington office, I was made to feel at home by the friendly staff, and Rita was charm personified. She immediately saw what I was aiming for with my lip and we decided to go for a slightly fuller top lip to even out my face, with some added injections around the corners of my mouth to lift the lips a little- so I'll look faintly smiling all the time. We were going to use Juvederm Ultra as this was her preferred choice for plumping up young lips.

Wearing the numbing cream

To start with a topical numbing cream was applied and I waited for half an hour with an attractive cream moustache. Next were the injections. I won't lie- they were painful, but no worse than waxing and over in five minutes. My lips felt swollen and tender and I was given an ice pack to hold to my face.

The lumps before they vanished.

I was told not to do anything strenuous or eat hot or cold food for a few hours and to massage and lumps that appeared in the lips. My lips remained quite tender and bruised for a few days and then started to settle down. Unfortunately my lips were quite lumpy (see image) and I was a bit worried. I religiously massaged them daily, and the bumps remained. I called the surgery and was assured this was normal and they would go down. Two weeks in I saw Dr Rita and there were still some lumps. She told me that if they were there in a week to go back and see her- but thankfully they disappeared a few days later. The lumps weren't that noticeable- but it was odd as I could feel them with my tongue.

A month on and I love my fuller sexier pout. I feel a lot more confident and I love the fact that the results will last around 6 months (dependent on the person).

Dr Rita was very friendly and made the process less intimidating, and I think I might be a new devotee to the West London lipstick queen.

The Juvederm Ultra LIp treatment costs £475 per syringe if paying by cheque or debit card.
