selena_gomez_feather_hair_extensions.jpgThe recent trend of clipping or bonding feathers into the hair (a la Selena Gomez) has had a surprising impact on fishermen - it's led to fashion followers in the US looking anywhere they can for the most striking feathers - and they've been completely clearing out fly fishing shops.

"I've been out for probably a month," Angler owner Bill Thompson told the New York Times. "There is that worry that next year, fishermen won't have materials they'll need."

As you can imagine, the fishers are pretty unhappy - it takes about a year to grow the rooster feathers used for fly-fishing. Sadly for them, the manager of one of the farms where they're harvested isn't very sympathetic. "I think it's kind of cool," said Todd Lanning. "I think it's kind of sexy, to be honest with you, for lack of a better word."

Amazing. To find out more (fly fishing is much more interesting then we'd thought!) check out the rest of the article here on nytimes.com.
