Scars are an unfortunate happenstance of life. There are many different types- appendix scars, hysterectomy scars, falling over in heels scars- but they have one thing in common. As a rule, we tend to dislike our scars and want them to fade, and that's where Kelo-cote comes in. It's a silicone scar treatment designed to flatten and smooth raised and red scars, and as I had recently had a back discectomy I was the perfect candidate to try this out.

I tried the Kelo-cote Solaire Scar Gel because I liked that it included an SPF30 so I'd be protected when outdoors, as UV exposure can actually increase or inflame a scar.

[The original scar]

The Gel is a creamy colour and slightly viscous and dries clear in around 3 minutes. It's non sticky to touch and barely noticeable that you have it on. I've been using this twice daily for 3 months and here are my findings.

I was a bit paranoid about my scars fresh from surgery, and started using the gel as soon as my doctors approved it-which was around 2 months after surgery as they wanted the skin to heal. My scar was very red and raised and I was unsure if the gel would work at all. After continued use I did notice a distinct flattening and fading of the colour and though it's still present (would need more complex treatment to totally remove it) it's much more subtle.

True, some of the fading would have happened anyways as time is a healer, but I do feel that this treatment quickened the natural healing process, and kept me protected in the sun.

Kelo-cote was originally used by Surgeons treating scars and burns and it was so well received they created an over the counter solution. It uses a silicone gel which is designed to smooth and fade the scar, and is enriched so that it doesn't itch. I can attest that it was 100% comfortable on application- it went on like a body lotion and I felt zero discomfort on use.

The tube goes an incredibly long way- the 15g gel tube lasted around 3 months for me, so you really do get your money's worth.
