Nail varnish how to: Get Zooey Deschanel's Golden Globes tuxedo nail art

We showed you Zooey Deschanel's tuxedo-painted nails at the Golden Globes on Monday, almost as soon as they hit the red carpet - truth be told, they ended up being our favourite part of the entire event, so we had to recreate them.

So I started off with a white base, using two coats of NARS nail polish in Ecume (£13.50):

Then I walked around for a while feeling like I had Apple nails, before using the spike end of the Models Own X WAH nails nail art pen (£6) in black to draw on the tips:

Then came to tricky part - the bows. I said before that Zooey's nails looked like they had a DIY feel to them - they didn't: now I know how tricky this is, hers look about as perfect as you could get them, so she definitely had a nail artists help. The bow part is the most difficult: to create them, we drew two tiny triangles to make the sides, and coloured them in, drawing a dot in the centre:

I highly recommend practising this on a piece of paper for a bit first, and also watching that the pen doesn't squeeze out too much product, which will bring disaster.

Then came the dots - this was much easier:

For the smaller one nearest the bow, just a jab of the pen tip was enough, then going down, lightly squeeze the pen to deposit a slightly bigger drop of colour, and right at the bottom, the biggest one. On your smaller nails, be careful that you make the top dot small enough, or you wont have room for the last one.

In the end, you have this!

For a first try, we're pretty proud - what do you guys think? I'm planning on trying it using a silver base next - if you have a go to, make sure you show us: tweet them at us @kissandmakeup.
