I've always been looking for something to give my skin that extra flawless factor. Blessed, (I say that dryly) with the joy of combination skin, it takes a particularly special product to balance out all of my skin's quirks. Here's where the use of primer really comes to the fore with its ability to mask, refine and smooth out the bits we'd all rather not draw attention to!
Not only that, but a really great primer will also make your foundation last longer and keep that 'fresh' make up look going strong for as long as you do. When it comes to these canvas-enhancing products, which truly come up trumps? In my quest to discover I've been trying out the latest options on the market.
First up is L'Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Smoothing Resurfacing Primer, which has a lovely mousse-like texture and glides on leaving skin noticeably smoother and pores refined.
Other primers champion the creamier textures, such as Dr Lewinn's Private Formula Instant Beauty Radiance Booster. This Australian wonder-product is packed with over 70% Aloe Vera to hydrate and soothe and really brightens your skin tone. Cult brand Laura Mercier's oil free foundation primer is another cream option. With a light and refreshing consistency, this worked very well on my T-zone. When it came to applying concealer and foundation afterwards it definitely blended more evenly, leaving my skin looking distinctly improved. This is a great option for your handbag make up kit too with its handy tube packaging.

If your preference leans towards the gel spectrum of primers, then you'd be hard pushed to find better than Smashbox's Photo Finish , Airbase's Prime or THALGO Collagen Concentrate Serum. This is an alternative primer packed with skin plumping Native Marine Collagen, which prolongs and protects your skin's youthful glow. The clear gel formula glides on and you're instantly struck with its fresh fragrance. This would be a good one to use if you're aiming for a 'dewy' skin finish.

However, the standout for me has to be Youngblood Mineral PrimerThis has a paraben-free formula smoothes on leaving skin feeling velvety and camera close-up ready. Naturally rich in nutrients, skin-loving vitamins A and E and minerals, this cruelty-free primer really stands out in its abilities to transform and improve the look and texture of my skin. It's also perfect if, like me, your skin can be sensitive to certain ingredients.
