Like so many of us, it was cool older family members that inspired model Charlotte Free in her first beauty exploration that resulted in her signature pink hair.
"My cousins had pink hair and I always wanted to have my own rainbow," she told The Daily Dan, the Hamptons edition of The Daily. "I was never allowed, but eventually I dyed it myself with Manic Panic. After the first time I went brighter and brighter."
She has apparently tried lots of other colors, with green being her favorite. And she still dyes those tresses herself, she says!
"I'm short! I have pink hair! Being discovered was a happy accident," Charlotte said. She was playing in an arcade when a photographer approached her and asked if he could photograph her. Sounds a bit creepy, but her story had a happy ending as the photographer took her to IMG models where she got a contract.
Speaking of contracts, she recently landed one with Maybelline New York.
"Signing with Maybelline New York was big. I really felt like I'd arrived in the modeling world." When her agent gave her the news she was still asleep and it didn't fully register. When it really hit her later, she was so excited she bought herself the unique reward of a new synthesizer. Apparently when in California she spends time making electronic music.
"I'm probably not going to come out with anything for a good year," she said. "I know how to play drums, bass, and a little bit of guitar."
