YSL-Northern-Lights-Makeup-Collection-for-Christmas-2012-model.jpgI love the idea behind Yves Saint Laurent's Holiday Collection - it's inspired by the Aurora Borealis! Lloyd Simmonds, YSL Beauté's Creative director explained in a statement, "The Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, are incredibly vivid and I have many memories of witnessing this magical spectacle from my childhood. Their lights inspired me to create this collection of intense colours, shot through with violet and midnight blue and sprinkled with slivers of pearl, like a star-filled night."

The idea makes for a beautiful collection: shimmering and pearlescent whites with glints of purple, pink and green juxtaposed with the inky blues of the night sky. The lipgloss especially helps to convey this inspiration, of which there are two in the collection. Below is Golden Gloss in 56 Rose Polarie (£22), a 'snow white' gloss with a purple tint when it catches the light and a subtle pink shimmer. It's really, really pretty.

Also in the collection are two limited edition palettes, the star products, which come in silver-sequined pouches in the image of Saint Laurent vintage dresses. They are a highlighter; the Boréal Palette Polar Light (£39.50), and the Boréal Palette Arctic Night (£39), which holds four shades of Pure Chromatics eyeshadow in dark navy, silvery blue, grey, and a silvery white.

I also love the sound of the La Laque Couture in the collection - N°33 Première Neige (£18) is a shimmery, pearlescent top coat that gives the base colour a 'lunar' makeover - perfect for Christmas.

There's also a beautiful gold eyeliner pot (I'm a sucker for a good gold eyeliner), Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils in No7 (£22), which Lloyd suggests tracing thinly along the lashline like "a golden strand", as well two new colours of Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking (£23), based on YSL gowns - gray, and plum. We tried the gray (below), which actually doesn't look much different to black. Great formula though, gave a great curl.

A really nice collection, with a really interesting idea behind it - that top coat is definitely going to sell out (hopefully not before I get my hands on one!). It all came out this week - you can buy it all at yslbeauty.co.uk
