Beware of bargain GHD's! A guide to getting the real deal

fake_ghd.jpg

The old adage 'if it's to good to true it probably is', has existed for a long time, yet still people keep hoping they'll be the one who gets lucky. In the cases of the lottery a very very few people manage to beat the odds, and occasionally on eBay you get a bargain due to someone misspelling their product. But when you see a Chloe bag selling for £50 you should smell a rat, and equally suspicion should kick in when you see GHD's selling for half their in store price point. But it's not always easy to tell that the company is fake, as many of the websites look very professional, have all the right logos and have a .co.uk URL!

Type 'Cheap GHD's' into Google and literally hundreds of sites come up promising you everything from limited edition models in multiple colours, to buying a model for the low price of £40 odd quid- around 60% cheaper!

So how do you spot a fake before you buy, and how can you double check your straightener is the real deal?

Beauty boo-boos #1: Tell us your worst makeup mistakes here!

makeup mistakes.jpgWe can't all claim to be expert stylists when it comes to our daily makeup routine and I know I'm certianly still learning the ropes - even decades after I first 'borrowed' my mother's Mary Quant blusher.

But sometimes you do spot a crime against cosmetics so dire that it's hard not to go right up to the culprit and volunteer a bit of free styling advice. I wouldn't try it: it generally doesn't go down too well. But to get our pet hates out in the open I'm asking Kiss & Makeup readers to submit their worst beauty errors to the site today so we can all have a collective cringe.

If there's a beauty error you particularly hate, let me know in comments below or tweet them to @kissandmakeup on Twitter and read on for the errors we've already identified.

Doubletake UK Studio Photoshoot Review: Beautiful pictures but a nightmare experience

Doubletake 1.jpg

You know those offers you get accosted with on the street? The ones where you're promised a 'top name' salon day out for a ridiculously low price that includes a makeover and hairstyle? Hopefully you've stayed away from those scams, but you may have fallen into the other trap- the lure of a free photoshoot with one 'lovely free print for you to take home'.

I was given a voucher to their 'flagship Farringdon branch' and like the fool I was I thought I'd go along for a day of pampering. I was prepared that there would be a bit of a hard sell when it came to choosing my free photo but I'd never expected anything like what occurred. The finished photos may look stunning but the tale behind them is that of sweat, money and six months of angry negotiating.

The best of the rest: MOBO Beauty looks from Alesha Dixon et al

The MOBO awards took place last night, and Leona Lewis and Estelle were the women to watch out for. I can't say the same of their beauty though, as Leona DIDN'T turn up, and Estelle has some rather unattractive flaps of skin on show. So who won the MOBO beauty awards, and who joined the likes of Mel B in the beauty blooper corner?

Beauty Blooper of the year: Mel B at the MOBO awards

MEl b mobo.jpg

Yes, I know you were presenting the awards and that's pretty impressive, but that's no reason to borrow Princess Leia's costume now is it? I'm happy that you've moved on from that whole Ed Murphy incident and are now happily ensconced with Stephen Belafonte but why did you choose to look like a throwback to Star Wars? We've all heard about your diva like demands so it doesn't matter what the wardrobe mistress said, you could have overruled her. And you should have. Add to that monstrosity of an outfit those skyscraper curls and sparkly eyeshadow and we have a disaster of epic proportions.

Heidi Montag's Overdosin' video look dissected

0825_heidi_montag_video_08-thumb-450x675.jpg

Love her or hate her you have to admit that Ms Montag is normally well known for her groomed looks (any whiny boyfriend obviously). To see her looking so eighties and unkempt is quite a shock, so you do think she manged to pull off the 'I just go the gym like this' Flashdance flashback?

I'm not sold by her crimped hair and OTT use of gloss, but I have to applaud her for actually being willing to pull the stops out, as she's clearly trying to amuse rather than impress (hopefully). The lashings of eyeliner really accentuate her eyes, but the rosy gold and weird tan don't do anything for her. The video might be watchable if it was cut to under 2 minutes, and her aerobicized body does lend itself to lycra. Still, there's no way makeup like that would work if you were actually sweating....

The Tattoo that features Breast Implants: Hmm

lane-tattoo-boob-implants-healing.jpg

Now some people like tattoos, and some don't and the same normally goes with surgically enhanced breasts. Normally I say it's up to the individual to do what they like with their body, but when it comes to this- tattoos that are given a silicon boob job I can only say NO! No! Noooo! And apparently my cries of protest were heard as the body actually rejected the implants and they had to be removed!
