Industry Interview: Charlie le Mindu

Charlie Le Mindu 09.jpg

Charlie le Mindu is well known for his expertise in the hairdressing world, having started at the tender age of 13! He's used to snipping the tresses of the rich and famous, and he's been kind enough to answer some of our questions concerning changes in hairstyling in 2010. He shares his expertise and trend predictions with us below.

Q. What changes do you foresee in men's styling?

I think that the bowl cut will be big for 2010. Everyone tried to follow the grunge trend in 2009 and I'm hoping that for the New Year men will go sleek.

Q.What type of extensions are popular this year?

Wonderful Hair Cold Fusion Extensions. The quality from this brand is so high and the cold fusion technique uses no heat or glue in its application, it's the technology for 2010. This technique is kinder to your natural hair as it eliminates the harmful effects such as associated with typical heat applications. The hair really feels gorgeous and will make anyone look beautiful and last for up to 4 months. I think that people will be using extensions more and more for volume rather than just for length and we'll be seeing extensions styled with curls and rolls.

What's that brush for? We pick the brain of MAC Sr. Artist Romero Jennings

MagicMirth&Mischief-BrushBag-72.jpg

MAC makes so many makeup brushes, if you're not a pro it's as easy to be confused by them as it is to covet them. So I asked MAC Sr. Artist Romero Jennings to give me the scoop on how to get the best use out of the Wave of a Wand Sweep and Define Brush Bag, $49.50, from the Magic, Mirth & Mischief Holiday 09 collection.

The brushes that come in this cute patent-finish bag are the 129 SE Powder/Blush Brush, 190 SE Foundation Brush, 227 SE Large Fluff Brush, 212 SE Flat Eye Definer Brush and the 275 SE Medium Angled Shading Brush. The brushes are travel sized, are light but have a comfortable heft, and are a sort of shiny gunmetal color. To buy them all individually would cost $141.50. So if you're looking to expand your brush collection the holiday brush bags are a good value.

Click through for Jennings tips and tricks for making the most of these tools.

Bobbi Brown plum eye palette.jpg

For those of us who like our makeup application paint-by-numbers easy, here are some quick tips from Bobbi Brown herself on how to use her Velvet Plum Eye Palette, $40.00. I generally use the rule of applying the lightest color in a palette all over, the medium shade in the crease and the darkest shade with a wet, flat brush as eyeliner. But there's four colors in this palette and that always throws me for a loop!

Keep reading for Bobbi's simple steps.

Vintage beauty: get the 1940s glamour girl look

forties-makeup.jpgOf all the vintage 'looks' you might choose, 1940s is one of the most sophisticated but also the most difficult styles to pull off, owing to its paradoxical mix of austerity and glamour.

A few basic points to remember when going for the forties look is to create a flawless, velvety facial canvas with no sheen, shape and tint your brows to create high arches and go heavy on the mascara. Max Factor make-up artist Caroline Barnes has given detailed tips on how to get this look to Queens of Vintage, where you can read her full instructions on DIY forties styling, complete with product recommendations, here.

Ask the Expert: Haidresser Richard Ward tells you how to protect your hair for Winter

richard_ward_hair.jpgRichard Ward is something of an institution in thehairdressing world. He's the resident hair guru for GMTV, writes regular columns for the Sun,and regularly plays with the tresses of the rich and famous. We were lucky enough to grab some time with him for his advice on those winter hair problems.

Q Should you change your hairstyle during winter, and if so what do you recommend?

Lustrous locks need to follow a maintenance programme and home-care regime to keep them looking perfectly groomed and keep straggly ends at bay. Extensions with length only look great when it's moving and swingy - too straight and ends look frazzled and splintered. Ditch the styling irons and keep chunky by regular trimming to make hair look and feel full and bouncy.

Richard Ward gives you the lowdown on lovely summer hair

Richard_ward1.jpg

Richard Ward stylist to the stars has done us all favor and shared some of his salon secrets so we can achieve fabulous summer styles at home. He tells us how to keep out hair in tip top shape with the changing climate, and has a couple of tips up his sleeve as well...

'Sun naturally bleaches hair so even virgin hair can become sun-lightened and can cause a subtle re-growth. Sun also causes colour fade so ensure you protect your colour investment and follow the golden rules; either cover up or protect.

Don't fight hair's natural movement and texture in humid conditions; all you will do is spend hours straightening and taming with styling equipment (and causing more damage) only to step into the humid atmosphere and have hair instantly return to it's natural state. Instead, work with your hair's natural curl or wave and give your hair a holiday from the normal use of electrical equipment.
